Say Ahhhhhhh!

Kalissa had her very first dental appointment this week!  Although I heard from many outlets to see the dentist much earlier than now, our pediatrician recommended that we wait until age 3 to lessen the chances of it being a traumatic experience.  As it stands now, Kali loves to visit the doctor and we wanted her to feel the same about her dentist.

We chose a children's dentistry office very close to home and then began preparing her for the visit by telling her about "the tooth doctor" that she'd be seeing soon.  She was also able to see 1st-hand what a dentist does because while Daddy and I were away in Las Vegas, Brooklyn had a dentist appointment that Kali accompanied her to.  I'm sure all of these things helped to produce the fabulous experience that we ended up having!  Daddy didn't go to this appointment (this is the only appointment that he's missed since she was in my belly) so I packed up Kali and we headed over to see Dr. Whitcomb without him.

The office was just darling.  They had an old-school table top Galaxy game that she played over and over again, along with toys and a working electric train display.  When the hygienist called her name, she BOLTED through the door and ran straight back into the treatment area with no fear at all.  The hygienist said, "Wow!  This is going to be fun!"  The office set up was an open bay of dental chairs (no individual offices) so everyone could see/hear what everyone else was doing.  I thought that was weird because what if someone was in pain and needed privacy??  Maybe that was just the area for cleaning and maybe there were offices for the major procedures that I couldn't see.  The hygienist asked Kalissa to sit in the dental chair but she was apprehensive about doing that so I sat in the chair and then she sat in my lap and we reclined back together.  The hygienist (can't believe I didn't get her name!) was great and explained every little thing to Kalissa.  She would first demonstrate on Kali's finger so that she would see that the procedure wasn't going to hurt.  Within minutes Kali kicked me out of the chair and was eager to get started!  She laughed and giggled so much that eventually all eyes were on her (just the way she likes it)!  She even asked to do it herself and everyone got a kick out of that. The hygienist didn't bat an eye at her request and Kali went to work polishing her own teeth! *lol* She especially loved squirting the water into her mouth and then suctioning it out.

Then it was time for x-rays.  I didn't know how she would do with that, but she was great.  The hygienist was able to get perfect images on the first try with no issues from Kali.  When we looked at her x-rays, the hygienist showed me that her lower teeth already has permanent teeth perfectly lined up and waiting to come through.  She said that Kali will most likely lose her bottom 2 front teeth within the next year!!!  OMG!!  I explained to her that those same 2 bottom teeth came in when she was 3 months old.  Later, I overheard her showing the x-rays to Dr. Whitcomb who must have been a little shocked because she repeated to him that Kali got her first teeth at 3 months old.  Dr. Whitcomb then examined her mouth and reported everything was perfect.  She has Class 1 Occlusion which means her teeth alignment is normal.

Everyone, even the front office staff, hated to see Kalissa go saying that 6 months is way too long before seeing her again!  They asked if she could stay and show the other kids how it's supposed to be done.  *lol*  Of course, Kalissa soaked up every bit of it and gave everyone hugs before leaving.  When we got to school, she proudly showed her classmates and teacher her "sparkling" teeth.  I'm definitely glad we waited this long for her first dental visit.  I think we have another winner!
