My Baby Can Read!

About a week or two ago, Kalissa brought me her "Your Baby Can Read" sliding word book. I figured she wanted me to read to her (even though this isn't a "story" book) so I opened it up and started reading the words. Much to my surprise, she began pointing to the words as I said them! I was pretty amazed because Daddy and I never do the program's flash cards or the books with her. We just let her watch the videos because she really enjoys them. My take on the program was...no she can't read, but it's still a helpful tool because I strongly believe it's the reason her vocabulary is so good so early on. My tune certainly changed after I saw her in action with the sliding words book. I told Daddy, "We HAVE to get this on video". That's been a challenge because everytime we break out the camera, she gets distracted! *lol* Today we got some success:

Not bad for not yet being 17 months old, right?! Had we actually stuck with the program as directed, I'll bet she'd be one of those babies on the infomercial by now! Is it reading or has she just memorized the shapes of the word? Who knows. What I do know is that she actually looks at every word before making her selection so that tells me she's not just guessing. We're still not going to drill her, but as long as she enjoys it we'll keep encouraging her. Reading is FUN-damental!

Wow, that is impressive! Even if she is memorizing the shape of the word, for a 17-month old to memorize the shape and then know to slide it so Mommy and Daddy will say "good job", that is STILL impressive :) As we discussed today, your baby girl is S-M-A-R-T!
