We arranged for her photoshoot to begin at 6:30 pm on 7/8/12. Apparently, that would be optimal timing for beach lighting, no shadows, and everything else that photogs have to take into account when doing a beach shoot. We arrived a 6:20...the photog arrived at 6:50. Great. In a 3 year old's world, 30 minutes is a LIFETIME of waiting, especially since we were at her most favorite place in the world. Daddy took this opportunity to play with our new camera and he got a couple of good shots.
We did everything we could to keep Kali's energy up and when the photog finally arrived, she said the sun was still a little too bright and that we needed to wait some more. *sigh* She took some test shots of Kalissa and then asked me if we had thought about getting her professional work. I told her that she's already signed with an agency and it turns out, the photog has worked with Kali's agent. Once she heard that Kalissa is "a model" (Kali's first opportunity to audition for Carter's actually came up last week...but it was in Los Angeles and with everything that's going on right now, I didn't feel we would be able to make it without being stress balls) she went into "professional" mode and wanted to take pics for Kali's "portfolio". Ummm....that's not why we're here but since we had to burn some time waiting for the sun to set a little, we decided to go ahead and get some pictures away from the beach.
Kalissa had a ball! She took direction pretty well for a not-quite-3-year-old and a toddler who had been waiting 30 minutes to do something! She took every opportunity to ham it up with people passing by and she genuinely had a great time. We ended up with some nice looking "portfolio" pictures...but again, that's not what we were there for.
Finally, after almost an hour of shooting, I looked at the sun and it was basically setting. It was now 7:45 pm, the wind was whipping, it was cold, and Kalissa was NOT happy! Before the sun completely set, the photog suggested we get some family pictures. Again, this was NOT what I asked for, but after seeing the pictures I'm glad we did it. We are rarely able to take pictures as a family because one of us is always holding the camera, so this was actually a nice treat.
That took all of maybe 3 minutes and that was the last glimpse of a smile that we were able to get out of Kali. The next two photos are just plain sad! *lol* I should have gotten the hint from the first sad picture....but noooooo! I was still hoping for the "fun in the sun" pictures that I PAID her to take so I charged forward and changed her into her swimsuit!
Look at that face! This was NOT going to happen....not today and not now! After expressing my extreme disappointment, we scooped up our girl and headed home. Turns out, the botched shoot was not totally the photographer's fault. When we got to the car, Kali was feeling warm and it turned out to be the beginning of a fever that shot up to 102.6 and lasted a little over 24 hours. The photographer offered to retake the shoot at no cost but I really didn't want to go through the hassle.
The following weekend we decided to do our own "fun in the sun" shoot . We didn't pay attention to any photography rules and did our shoot right when the sun was at its highest point! *lol* Of course we quickly realized why that was a bad idea, but Daddy still ended up taking some pretty awesome pictures that truly capture her personality.....even if the lighting wasn't perfect!
Now, THAT'S the vision I had all along!
